Pierre Huyghe - L'Écrivain Public

Pierre Huyghe

L'Écrivain Public, 1995

Event, seven handwritten letters

L'Écrivain Public includes a public event, the protocol of past presentations and the rights to reenact the work in the future with a writer of choice. For each enactment a writer is chosen to record his or her observation.

The work was first performed in 1995 during the artist's solo exhibition at FRAC Montpellier. Huyghe asked a writer to record everything she could observe, hear or see within a specified period of time during the opening of his exhibition. During the performance her writing was immediately made public and put on display.

Andrew Berardini recorded his observations at the opening of Pierre Huyghe's retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in November 2015.
