In 1969, Bruce Nauman was invited to contribute to an "earth art" exhibition, he doesn't remember which one. He either telgrammed or otherwise mailed his contribution (he doesn't remember which and the original text is lost). He offered to have written the words "Leave the Land Alone" written in skywriting above the museum. It was not realized at the time either becuase of a lack of funds or because it wasn't taken seriously.
In 2009, curator Andrew Berardini initated the project to finally be realized over the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena as a part of the Armory Center for the Art's 20th anniversary.
Linked here is an article written on the project by Christopher Knight in the Los Angeles Times
